Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Products & Certification
What does NIJ certified mean?
NIJ (National Institute of Justice) certification means a ballistic product has been independently tested and verified to stop specific threats at defined velocity levels. It is the gold standard for ballistic protection in the United States. All ballistic products we carry meet or exceed NIJ standards.
What are the different NIJ protection levels?
NIJ rates armor by the threats it can stop:
- Level IIA — Stops 9mm and .40 S&W rounds
- Level II — Stops 9mm and .357 Magnum rounds
- Level IIIA — Stops .357 SIG and .44 Magnum rounds (most common for soft armor)
- Level III — Stops rifle rounds including 7.62mm FMJ
- Level IV — Stops armor-piercing rifle rounds (.30 caliber AP)
Not sure which level is right for you? Compare our plates or contact us for guidance.
How do I choose between soft armor and hard plates?
Soft armor (Levels IIA–IIIA) is lighter and more concealable, making it ideal for everyday wear or situations involving handgun threats. Hard plates (Levels III–IV) provide rifle-rated protection and are used in plate carriers for higher-threat environments. Our plate comparison page and vest comparison page can help you decide.
Do your ballistic shields meet NIJ standards?
Yes. Our ballistic shields are rated to NIJ standards and are designed for law enforcement, security teams, and tactical applications. Check our product catalog for specific ratings on each shield.
