NIJ-Rated Body Armor Guide
NIJ-Rated Body Armor Guide: What Rating Do You Need?
Choosing the right body armor starts with understanding NIJ ratings. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the U.S. government body that independently tests and certifies ballistic armor. If armor isn’t NIJ-certified, its protection claims are unverified.
NIJ Protection Levels Explained
NIJ Level II
- Stops: 9mm FMJ, .357 Magnum JSP
- Best for: Plainclothes officers, concealable daily wear
- Weight: Lightest soft armor option
NIJ Level IIIA
- Stops: .357 SIG FMJ, .44 Magnum SJHP — most common handgun threats
- Best for: Law enforcement, security professionals, executive protection
- Weight: Slightly heavier than Level II, still concealable
NIJ Level III
- Stops: 7.62mm FMJ rifle rounds (M80 ball)
- Best for: Tactical operations, active threat environments, military-style deployments
- Type: Hard armor plates only
NIJ Level IV
- Stops: .30 caliber armor-piercing (AP) M2 rounds
- Best for: Highest-risk environments, military and specialized law enforcement
- Type: Hard armor plates only — heaviest option
How to Choose the Right NIJ Rating
| Threat Environment | Recommended Level |
|---|---|
| Everyday civilian carry, concealed wear | NIJ Level II or IIIA |
| Security guard, private protection | NIJ Level IIIA |
| Executive protection detail | NIJ Level IIIA (soft) + III plates (escalation) |
| Active shooter / tactical response | NIJ Level III or IV plates |
| Military or high-threat patrol | NIJ Level IV |
